Western New England College upsets University of New England in TCCC Tournament

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Coach Charlie Haer had a good feeling his Western New England College women's volleyball team would play a strong match in its quarterfinal round match against the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tuesday (Nov. 4).

He was right.

With junior outside hitter Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, MA) compiling 15 kills and 11 digs, the sixth-seeded Golden Bears upset the third-seeded Nor'easters 3-0 winning by the scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-19.

Sophomore setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) added 25 assists and 13 digs as WNEC improved its record to 17-16 with its sixth consecutive victory.

Also helping out were senior libero Sarah Wainwright (Gilford, NH) who contributed 13 digs and sophomore outside hitter Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) who totaled six kills and 11 digs.

Western New England College advances to meet second-seeded Colby-Sawyer (a 3-0 winner over seventh-seeded Salve Regina) at 7:00 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 6) in a semifinal match of the tournament.

Junior Claire Varner (Breckenridge, MI) and sophomore Kristen Edwards (Laconia, NH) each had eight kills for UNE (17-14) who now awaits word on Monday of a possible bid to the ECAC Division III New England Tournament.

University of New England took the regular season meeting with Western New England College by the score of 3-1.
