WNEC tops Salve Regina and host University of New England in conference contests

BIDDEFORD, Me. - The Western New England College women's volleyball team moved into a tie for second place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a pair of victories over Salve Regina and the University of New England on Saturday (Oct. 17).

The Golden Bears defeated Salve Regina 3-2 in the first match by the scores of 26-24, 17-25, 25-13, 23-25, and 15-11.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, MA) led the way with 18 kills and 22 digs.

Junior outside hitter Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) added 17 kills and 10 digs.

Junior setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) had a season high 44 assists along with 11 digs.

Sophomore right side hitter Caroline Bitters (Greenfield, MA) contributed a season high 19 digs.

Western New England College then defeated the University of New England 3-1 following scores of  9-25, 25-20, 25-10, and 25-20.

Cervone, Shomo, and Boes each compiled double-doubles.

Cervone had 14 kills and 22 digs, Shomo 11 kills and 16 digs, and Boes 36 assists and 10 digs.

Junior libero Marci Egbert (Wayne, NJ) chipped in with 19 digs after totaling 17 in the opener against SRU.

WNEC, under rookie coach Kait Kozak, is now 20-8 overall and 5-1 in the league with Endicott.

The Seahawks fall to 8-16 and 4-3 in the conference. The Nor'easters (who beat SRU 3-1) drop to 8-12 and 4-4 in the league.
