Western New England College sweeps Regis and Wentworth to set school record for wins

BOSTON, Mass. - The Western New England College women's volleyball team is heading into The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament with momentum.

The Golden Bears completed their regular season in spectacular fashion with victories over Regis (3-0) and host Wentworth (3-1) Saturday afternoon (Oct. 31). WNEC took its opening contest 26-24, 25-18, and 25-14 over the Pride, then followed with a 25-14, 25-13, 28-30, 25-14 win over the Leopards to extend its winning streak to eight matches.

The two victories gave rookie coach Kait Kozak's team a 24-8 record, which is a new school record for wins, breaking the old mark of 22 set in 2007.

Western New England College also finished in a tie for first place with Endicott in the conference with a 9-1 record. The Golden Bears' only loss in league play was against the Gulls 3-2 back on September 19 in Springfield.

In the Regis match, junior middle blocker Lauren Landri (New Canaan, CT) had nine kills and a .538 hitting percentage along with five blocks.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, MA) also had nine kills with seven digs.

Junior setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) contributed 23 assists while freshman Jennifer Mears (Amherst, MA) added 12 digs.

The Golden Bears recorded a .336 hitting parentage against WIT with Cervone leading the way with a double-double of a season high 26 kills with 14 digs.

Landi had another solid outing with 13 kills and a season best six blocks.

Mears chipped-in with a season high 15 digs to go along with six kills.

Boes compiled a season best 44 assists with 13 digs.

Junior Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) also had 13 digs from the libero position.

Western New England College is seeded second in the TCCC playoffs and will host seventh-seeded Gordon at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 3) in a quarterfinal round match of the conference tournament.
