Hummer Goes for 7 Innings in 7-1 Win over Worcester State

DAVENPORT, Florida (March 14, 2022) – The Western New England baseball team saw stellar pitching from their starter Kevin Hummer on the afternoon and saw the bats turn around in the final three innings of the contest, taking down Massachusetts foe, Worcester State University by a final score of 7-1.

  • Worcester State: 2-3

How it Happened:

It was a pitcher's duel to being the contest as Kevin Hummer for the Golden Bears and Jarret Morrill for the Lancers of Worcester State would battle on the mound. Worcester State would grab three hits in the opening frame, though Hummer would force Chris Ausiello to ground out to record the innings final out to escape the jam. Paul Villecco would triple down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning with just one down for WNE, though Morrill would retire two Golden Bears by the way of the K to get out of the inning. 

Worcester State would grab the game's first run on a Sean Devin sacrifice fly to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. Western New England would see their opportunities come and go as the Golden Bears left five runners on base through the first five innings. The Golden Bears would come alive in the sixth inning, tying the score before grabbing their first lead of the game. 

In the inning, CJ Willis would reach on an error from the Lancers, and would continue his march to home plate on an error by the LF for Worcester State in the inning on a single from Jack Loftus, scoring Willis to give WNE their first run of the game. One batter later, Ben Harrison would fly out to right field, scoring Loftus, after he was able to swipe third during the Harrison at bat. Western New England would take the 2-1 lead out of the 6th inning. Hummer would toe the rubber for his seventh inning of work, getting a quick looking strikeout to start the inning. A surrendered single and stolen base for the Lancers would see a runner in scoring position with just one out. Hummer would dial back and get a strike out swinging and a ground ball out to short stop to end the threat and end the line for the starter. Hummer went the first seven innings for the Golden Bears, giving up just seven hits and one run while walking one and striking out eight. The Golden Bears would grab an extra run in the bottom half of the 7th inning when Paul Villecco singled to left field to bring in Aaron Cole, putting WNE ahead 3-1. 

The offense for the Golden Bears would explode for a four run eighth inning when Joe WebberVillecco, and Willis would all pick up scoring plays while at bat. Webber would rip an RBI single through the right side, scoring Vincent Caccavale to give WNE a 4-1 lead. Villecco would be clipped by a pitch with the bases full to send WNE to a 5-1 lead. Willis would put the game out of reach for the Lancers, reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman, scoring Cole and Jake Balderston giving WNE a 7-1 advantage.

Worcester State would leave two base runners on in the ninth inning as Jared Kuryan would get out of the inning unscathed to give the Golden Bears their fourth win of the season, taking down Worcester State by a final score of 7-1. Kuryan would pitch the final two innings, giving up just a pair of hits and no runs, while walking one and striking out five of his six outs. 

Around the Diamond:

  • Aaron Cole went 3-4 at the dish today for the Golden Bears, being the only hitter to collect three hits in the ballgame. 
  • Jake Balderston and Paul Villecco both notched two hits each, while Villecco had two RBIs in the win. 
  • Kevin Hummer made his first start of the 2022 season, going seven innings, giving up seven hits and one run while walking one and striking out eight Lancers. Jared Kuryan pitched the final two innings for WNE, giving up two hits and picking up five strikeouts. 
  • WNE finished the afternoon with seven runs on 11 hits and one error. Worcester State capped off the morning with one run on nine hits and three errors.
