Golden Bears Let One Slip Away Against The Anchormen

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 21, 2022) – The Western New England baseball team let the ballgame slip away from them against the Rhode Island College Anchormen, falling 14-9 after nine innings of play.

Records:

  • Western New England: 13-12-1
  • Rhode Island College: 20-6-1

How It Happened: The ballgame jumped off with a homerun from the second up to bat for the Anchormen Daniel Trzepacz to get on the scoreboard early. The Golden Bears took the lead to close out the first. While Sean Jamieson fouled out, Cody Waterbury ran past home plate followed by a single up the middle RBI from Aaron Cole for a WNE 2-1 lead. The Golden Bears picked up two more runs in the bottom of the second starting with the first career homerun from Kohtaro Shimada. An RBI double from Jameison brought the game to 4-1. After another inning of the Anchormen not completing a run, the Golden Bears, Jack Loftus hit a homerun in the bottom of the third to bump the lead 5-1.

The game took a turn in the top of the fourth when the Anchormen went for six runs on six hits. Izaiah Revera had the first RBI that led off the scoring runs for Rhode Island. Trzepacz collected two more RBIs and Jarrad Grossguth added a homerun for three RBIs to regain a lead of 7-5 before the bottom. For the Golden Bears, Loftus hit a triple and scored on an error for three RBIs and force them back ahead 8-7 entering the fifth. The Anchormen retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Five batters hit by the pitcher gave them three more runs and 10-8 advantage going into the bottom, but WNE was held to no runs to close out the sixth. Rhode Island College totaled for three more runs in the top of the eighth while the Golden Bears only earned one to now trail 13-9.  The Anchormen scored once more in the top of the ninth before the final and the Golden Bears fell short 14-9. 

Around the Diamond:

  • The Golden Bears were led by Jake Loftus who went 2-5 at bat, hitting a homerun, a tripple, had two runs, and four RBIs.
  • Aaron Cole and Sean Jamieson added combined three more RBIs.
  • Kohtaro Shimada also added to the homerun list.
  • The Golden Bears went for nine runs on 13 hits while giving up 14 runs on 14 hits.
