Willis, Greer Named CCC Players of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 11, 2022) – The Commonwealth Coast Conference announced their weekly awards on Monday afternoon, seeing CJ Willis and Matt Greer pick up accolades for baseball and men's lacrosse on the week. 

Baseball: 

CJ Willis, the first year, picked up his fourth honor of the season as the CCC Player/Rookie of the Week. In this week's four games of competition for the Golden Bears, Willis punched out seven hits for the WNE in 17 at bats, hitting .411 on the week. Willis led the Golden Bears in their second half of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon over the Fighting Scots of Gordon College, going 3-5 at the dish, picking up two runs, a double, and a home run while collecting five RBIs in the win. On the week, Willis totaled seven RBIs and scored seven WNE runs. He also stole two bases. On the season, the Auburn, Massachusetts native has collected 31 hits, 14 of those for extra bases, including a team high seven home runs and 23 RBIs. Willis has stolen seven bases while hitting .383 on the season, also a team high. WNE baseball competes four more times this week, hosting Elms College on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:30 pm from Trelease Park, before hitting the road for a short trip north to Amherst College, before returning to CCC play on Saturday, April 16 at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader with Roger Williams University. 

Men's Lacrosse:

Graduate Student Matt Greer picked up 14 points in two games this week, as the Golden Bears came away with yet another conference win on Saturday afternoon over the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology. Greer started off the week in non-conference action at Springfield College scoring a career high four goals, while picking up two assists at Stagg Field. Greer took seven shots, all on goal in the contest, while scooping one ground ball. In Saturday's CCC win over Wentworth, Greer continued his on-field dominance, scoring three times and picking up five assists in the win. Greer collected eight points, tied for a season best, on the afternoon, picking up three ground balls and causing one turnover for WNE. On the season, Greer has collected a career high 22 goals while assembling 32 assists, good for 54 points. Greer is three assists shy of 100 career assists and has totaled 161 points in his Golden Bears career. Western New England men's lacrosse wraps up the season with five conference contests, beginning on Wednesday, April 13 at 7:00 pm when the Golden Bears end their four-game road trip at Nichols College. WNE returns to Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday, April 16 at 4:00 pm to host Endicott College.
