Baseball Trounces Dean in Non-Conference Play

FRANKLIN, Mass. (April 28, 2022) - The Western New England baseball team took a road contest from the Dean College Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon, coming away with a 16-4 victory behind a three RBI afternoon from both Ben Harrison and CJ Willis

Records:

  • Western New England: 16-13-1
  • Dean College: 7-26

How it Happened:

The Golden Beats failed to get on the board in the top of the inning while Dean opened with the first three runs of the game in the bottom of the inning. Two singles would bring home three runs for the Bulldogs, as WNE would struggle from the get-go. Golden Bear pitching would settle in however, and the offense would come alive, grabbing three runs in the top of the third to even the score. 

Western New England would load the bases for their best statistical hitter this season as CJ Willis would step up to the dish.  Willis would crank a three-run triple, scoring all three runs to tie the score at three after three innings of play. WNE would take their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Ben Harrison would rope a two RBI double, scoring both Aaron Cole and Cody Waterbury, giving the Golden Bears a 5-3 lead. Dean College would come around in their half of the fifth and get one run back on an RBI single, giving WNE just a one run lead with just under half the game remaining. 

Western New England's offense would erupt in the top of the sixth, taking the lead for good in the ballgame. CJ Willis would pick up a single and advancement on an error which scored Cody Waterbury while Ben Harrison and Henry Schowerer would pick up RBI hits, giving Western New England an 8-4 lead. 

Seven more runs would come around the bases for the Golden Bears as WNE would hammer the pitching of the Bulldogs, taking a commanding 11 run lead after seven innings of play. In the inning Aaron Cole, CJ Willis, Henry Schowerer, Kohtaro Shimada, and Cody Waterbury would collect hits to score runs, giving the Golden Bears an 11-run advantage at the end of the inning. 

Western New England would tack on an extra run in the top of the ninth when Ryan Snow collected an RBI single to left field, scoring Scott West and giving WNE a 16-4 lead. Aaron Cole would shut the door on the Bulldogs in the final inning, sending Western New England to a 12-run victory on Thursday afternoon. 

Around the Horn:

  • WNE came away with 16 runs on 19 hits on the afternoon, collecting six milt-hit games. 
  • CJ Willis collected three hits in six at-bats, driving in three runs. Ben Harrison also drove in three for WNE, collecting two hits. 
  • WNE collected seven extra base hits on the afternoon, including two triples. 
  • WNE's final three pitchers, Aidan Gowaski, Demitri Boulas, and Aaron Cole would shut down the Bulldogs, throwing a combined three innings, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out five.. 
  • Western New England pitching totaled 14 strikeouts out of their 27 outs on the afternoon. 
  • Dean College was led by Kyle Obst who went 2-3 in the loss, collecting two RBIs. 
  • WNE would leave 13 runners on base while Dean College left eight aboard. 
  • This is the first meeting all time between the two schools.

  • Western New England returns to CCC play as they travel to Salve Regina University for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 30.
  • Dean College travels to Elms College on Friday, April 29 for GNAC play.
