Golden Bears Improve to 5-1 with 9-0 Victory at MCLA

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (March 30, 2018) – The Western New England University men's tennis team improved its record to 5-1 with a 9-0, non-conference victory over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) on Friday afternoon at the Berkshire West Athletic Club.

The Golden Bears rolled to their third straight win without dropping a single set.

Western New England got off to a fast start with victories in all three doubles flights to open up a 3-0 lead. Sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) defeated Jared Freeman and Aaron Goldsmith 8-1 at No. 1, while sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) posted an 8-0 victory over Mohamed Mahrous and Matt Bluteau in the second slot.

Junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) and freshman Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-0 win over Charles Najimy and Nick Castle at No. 3.

In singles play, Kalmer earned a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Goldsmith at No. 1, and Surawski topped Freeman in the second spot, 6-0, 6-0.

Gordon registered a 6-3, 6-0 win over Najimy at No. 3, while Tran defeated Mahrous 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.

Rounding out the final two singles positions, sophomore Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Bluteau at No. 5, and Russell blanked Reydel Santana 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

Western New England (5-1) resumes CCC play next Wednesday at Curry, while MCLA (0-2) hosts Rhode Island College on Thursday.
