Western New England Falls to CCC-Leading Nichols, 8-1

Kalmer posts 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles

DUDLEY, Mass. (April 11, 2018) –
Sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) picked up a win at No. 1 singles, but the Western New England University men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Nichols College on Wednesday afternoon at the Robinson Tennis Courts. 

Kalmer improved to 9-1 this season at the top singles position with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Brandon Howard, but the Bison took the remaining five singles flights and all three doubles matchups.

Kalmer and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) lost to Blake Norton and August Moeller at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.

Guilherme Barbosa and Peter Coletti swept Western New England's No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.), while junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) and freshman Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) fell to Howard and Igor Markowski, 8-1 at No. 3.

In singles play, Barbosa topped Surawski, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Norton defeated Gordon 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

Brandon Stewart cruised past Tran, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, while sophomore Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) and Russell fell at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, as Western New England (7-3, 2-2 CCC) heads to Endicott and Nichols (12-2, 4-0 CCC) travels to Gordon.
