Western New England Eliminated From CCC Tournament with 5-1 Loss to Roger Williams

Kalmer & Kohut post 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles

BRISTOL, R.I. (April 28, 2018) –
The sixth-seeded Western New England University men's tennis team was eliminated from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament with a 5-1 loss to third-seeded Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon at the RWU Tennis Courts. 

With the win, Roger Williams (10-5) moves on to the CCC semifinals to take on No. 2 seed Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday. Western New England closes out the season with a record of 8-7.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play, with their wins coming in the second and third flights.

Jake Cole and Thomas O'Leary got it started with an 8-0 victory over freshman Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) and junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) at No. 3, before the No. 2 duo of Jared Deibe and Brendan White defeated sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.), 8-1.

Sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) got the Golden Bears on the board with their 8-2 result over Grant Rosenberg and Nick Spoor at No. 1 doubles.

Roger Williams sealed the triumph with three singles wins. O'Leary topped Russell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6, and Cole posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Tran at No. 4 before Spoor ended the match with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Gordon at No. 3.
