Western New England Gets Back on Track with 9-0 Win over Salve Regina

Golden Bears improve to 3-4 in CCC play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 21, 2018) –
The Western New England University men's tennis team snapped its three-match skid with a 9-0 victory over Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Volvo Outdoor Courts. 

Western New England set the tone for the match with a 3-0 sweep in doubles play. The Golden Bears' No. 1 duo of sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) defeated Will Masse and Trevor Jones 8-1, while the No. 2 squad of sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) won by the same score over Aaron White and Zach Monahan.

In the final doubles slot, junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) teamed up with freshman Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) for an 8-2 victory over John Leonard and Clarke Dipiazza.

At the top of the singles lineup, Kalmer remained perfect in CCC play (7-0) with his 6-1, 6-3 decision over Masse. Surawski won by an identical score against Jones at No. 2, and Gordon posted a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over White at No. 3.

Rounding out the final three singles positons, Tran topped Monahan 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, sophomore Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 result over Kevin Hunt at No. 5, and Russell downed Alexander Azary 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

Both teams wrap up their regular season schedules on Tuesday, as Western New England (8-5, 3-4 CCC) travels to Quincy to take on Eastern Nazarene, and Salve Regina (2-10, 1-6 CCC) returns home to host Endicott.
