Golden Bears Open 2016-17 Campaign at CCC Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. (October 22, 2016) – The Western New England University women's swimming team opened its 2016-17 campaign earlier today with the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Invitational, hosted by Roger Williams University at the Aquatics Center on campus.

The Golden Bears placed seventh in the seven-team field with 14 points. Host Roger Williams finished first with 237 points, followed by Regis (63) and the University of New England (63).

Junior Erika Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass.) posted an 11th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (27.31 seconds) and a 17th place performance in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.47). Both efforts meet the A cut standard for the New England Championships. 

Making her collegiate debut, freshman Emily Elliott (Cortland, N.Y.) earned a 12th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.54), a New England Championship A cut performance, and a 17th place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:35.36), a B cut effort. 

Also making their debuts were freshmen Brittany Bosma (North Port, Fla.) and Khadijah Allen (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Bosma finished 16th and 17th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:19.11) and 50-yard freestyle (27.82), respectively, while Allen registered a 40th place effort in the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.75).

Bosma's time in the 50-free was fast enough to meet the New England Championship B cut standard.

Sophomore Megan Empie (Delmar, N.Y.) led two Western New England entries in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing 35th in 1:13.34. Senior captain Emily Trumbley (Prospect, Conn.) placed 41st in 1:17.92.

Junior Jacquelyn Peterson (Beverly, Mass.) competed in both the 200-yard freestyle (19th, 2:20.93) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:20.78). Junior Janelle Lief (San Jose, Calif.) joined Peterson in the 200-free (23rd, 2:35.00) while also recording a 21st place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:13.63).

The Golden Bears also posted seventh-place finishes in both the 200-yard medley relay (2:06.12) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.61) and a sixth-place effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:10.79).
