Carly Skibinski Spikes Career-High 13 Kills to Propel Golden Bears' Fast Start at JWU

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Sophomore Carly Skibinski pounded a career-best 13 kills to pace all student-athletes, and junior setters Jessica Sincero and Jenna Leuck combined for 38 assists, as the Western New England University women's volleyball team won its season opener at Johnson & Wales, 3-1, in the Wildcat Center on Tuesday evening. The set scores were 25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-23.

Western New England outhit the hosts .400 to minus-071 behind 10 kills against just two attack errors to take the opening set by 10 points. Sophomore Alona Kornberg (6 kills, 12 digs, 5 aces) had two service aces and a kill to close out the first set on a 5-0 run.

Sincero, who also had 16 digs, posted 21 assists with four kills and Leuck dished 17 helpers with four kills. Senior Olivia Lathrop added 10 kills. Freshman Emily Woodford helped jumpstart the WNE offense by posting a match-high 23 digs in her Golden Bear debut.

The Wildcats were led offensively by Nastasia Kapustin's seven kills, and Emily Kalmink had six. Kellen Tensen had an all-around game of 21 assists, 11 digs and three total blocks.

The Golden Bears, who never trailed in the first, second or fourth sets, scored the last two points of the match on a pair of Lathrop terminations.

Western New England is back in action on Thursday at Western Connecticut State in Danbury.
