Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Triumph at Eastern Nazarene

QUINCY, Mass. (October 21, 2015) - The Western New England University volleyball team turned in a season-high .342 hitting percentage, cruising to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-13) victory at Eastern Nazarene College this evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Lahue Physical Education Center.

Western New England, which won all three sets by double-digits, did not trail until Eastern Nazarene won the first point of the third frame. The Golden Bears registered 39 kills with just 13 errors in 76 total attempts over the three set match.

Sophomore middle hitter Carly Skibinski (Milford, N.J.) keyed the impressive offensive effort for Western New England, hitting .833 with ten kills and no errors in 12 swings. Senior Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) added nine kills (.400), and freshman Jessica Witkowski (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) chipped in with seven (.667).

Junior setters Jessica Sincero (Verplanck, N.Y.) and Jenna Leuck (Dumont, N.J.) facilitated the offense, combining for 23 assists, while also contributing defensively with four digs each. Freshman libero Johanna Harrison (North Kingstown, R.I.) led all players with 15 digs, and classmate Jenna Ferguson (Ellington, Conn.) finished with three aces, three digs and two kills.

Eastern Nazarene was led by senior outside hitter Hannah Welsh (Derry, N.H.), who had a solid all-around night with six kills, six digs and five assists.

Western New England took control of the match early, winning the first two points on service aces by sophomore Alona Kornberg (Fair Lawn, N.J.) as part of a 7-0 run to open the contest. The Lions were never able to recover, as an 8-0 tear by the Golden Bears later in the frame increased the visitors' lead to 15 (19-4). Western New England eventually posted a 16-point win to go up 1-0 in the match.

The second set was more competitive, with five ties early on, including 10-10. An Eastern Nazarene service error followed by three straight kills by Witkowski gave the Golden Bears a 14-10 lead, and after the Lions pulled back to within two, Western New England posted a 10-0 run to effectively seal the set.

Eastern Nazarene took its first lead of the match in the third set, going up 1-0 on a Golden Bear attack error. Western New England claimed the next three points, however, and did not trail the rest of the way en route to another 25-13 victory.

Western New England (10-10, 3-2 CCC) will be back in action on Saturday with a pair of matches at Endicott College. The Golden Bears take on Endicott at noon, before facing Colby in a non-conference contest at 2 p.m. Eastern Nazarene (3-21, 0-5 CCC) plays host to Wentworth on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
