Volleyball Falls to Keene State in Four Sets

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 20, 2015) - The Western New England University volleyball team got off to a strong start with an opening set win, but visiting Keene State College claimed the next three frames on its way to a 3-1 (18-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-12) non-conference victory this evening at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Senior middle hitter Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) paced the Golden Bear attack with a team-high 13 kills, hitting .324 with just two errors in 34 attempts. Lathrop also added two block assists and two digs on the defensive end.

Sophomore Carly Skibinski (Milford, N.J.) and senior Kelsey Armstrong (Groton, Conn.) combined for 15 kills and seven digs, while junior setter Jessica Sincero (Verplanck, N.Y.) turned in a double-double with 22 assists and 16 digs.

Freshman libero Emily Woodford (Belchertown, Mass.) was one of three Golden Bears to record a trio of service aces, as Western New England registered 13 in the match.

Senior setter Alexis Michal (Windham, N.H.) dished out a match-best 40 assists for Keene State, while also leading the Owls' defensive effort with 15 digs. Classmate Angela Silveri (Poughquag, N.Y.) and sophomore Rachel Lamica (Malone, N.Y.) each finished with double-doubles, combining for 24 kills and 25 digs.

Western New England used a 6-0 run early in the first set to open up a 6-2 lead, eventually extending its advantage to nine (17-8) on a kill by Lathrop that capped a 4-0 run later in the frame. The Owls won the next five points to pull back to within four (17-13), but they were never able to close the gap as Western New England posted a seven point victory.

Trailing 22-21 late in the second set, the Golden Bears turned in a 3-0 run to reclaim a one-point advantage. Keene State tied the frame on a kill by Silveri, before winning four of the last six points to even the match.

The third set was a back and forth affair in which neither team led by more than two until the Owls went up 18-15 on a kill by junior Taylor Bright (Folsom, Calif.). Western New England won the next point, but the Owls followed with a 4-0 run to open up a 22-16 lead. The Golden Bears battled eventually battled all the way back to tie the set at 24 on a kill by Armstrong, but Keene State won the final two points of the set to go up 2-1 in the match.

Leading 8-5 early in the fourth frame, the visitors took control with a 7-0 run and never looked back. Western New England would pull back to within six (16-10), but could get no closer as the Owls closed out the match with a 25-12 win.

Western New England (9-10, 2-2 CCC) will be right back in action tomorrow night at Eastern Nazarene, while Keene State (18-8, 4-1 LEC) returns to the court on Saturday at Eastern Connecticut State.
