Senior forward Troy Remillard adds two goals to NCAA DIII-leading total
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 7, 2017) – Senior forward Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) added two more goals to his NCAA Division III-leading total, but Wheaton College held off Western New England University, 3-2, in non-conference men's soccer action on Thursday afternoon at Suprenant Field.
Top Performers
• Remillard, who earned Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Offensive Player of the Week honors on Tuesday after piling up five goals over Western New England's first two games of the season, opened the scoring in the 24th minute before finding the back of the net again in the 75th minute.
• Junior midfielder Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was credited with an assist on Remilard's second goal.
• Senior forward Amara Sesay (Bronx, N.Y.) led Wheaton offensively with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Shawn McCall (Sammamish, Wash.) and junior Thomas Gatanis (New York, N.Y.) also scored for the Lyons.
Match Review
• Remillard staked the Golden Bears to a 1-0 lead at the 23:04 mark when he beat a Wheaton defender to the ball just outside the 18-yard box, cut towards the goal along the end line and snuck a shot past senior goalkeeper Erik Wisniewski (Salisbury, Mass.) inside the near post.
• McCall equalized for the Lyons in the 36th minute, and Wheaton pulled ahead less than three minutes later on Gatanis' first goal of the season.
• After taking a 2-1 lead into halftime, Sesay provided the visitors with an insurance goal in the 53rd minute.
• Western New England pulled back to within a goal at the 74:38 mark, when Liccardi sent a ball into the box and Remillard fought off a defender before firing a shot into the back of the net.
• The Golden Bears continued to attack late in regulation, but were unable to secure an equalizer.
Notes
• Remillard's seven goals through three games this season lead all of NCAA Division III.
• The Golden Bears outshot the Lyons 17-9, but the two teams were even with two corner kicks apiece.
• Western New England junior goalkeeper Tyler Lavigne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) made all four of his saves in the first half.
