Gordon Edges Western New England in CCC Semifinals, 1-0

Remillard and Pingree account for eight of Golden Bears' 11 shots

WENHAM, Mass. (October 31, 2017) – The second-seeded Gordon College men's soccer team edged third-seeded Western New England University, 1-0, in the semifinal round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament on Tuesday night at the Brigham Complex. 

With the win, Gordon (13-5-1) advances to Saturday's CCC championship match to take on top-seeded Endicott College, which defeated No. 4 seed Wentworth 2-1 in overtime in Tuesday's other semifinal. Western New England's season comes to a close at 12-7-1.

Top Performers
• Seniors Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) and Logan Pingree (Middletown, Conn.) accounted for eight of Western New England's 11 shots in the contest, including four of the team's five shots on goal.

• Gordon senior defender Jerry Williams (Royersford, Pa.) scored the only goal of the game in the 23^rd minute.
• Fighting Scots' freshman goalkeeper Wesley Sprague (Naperville, Ill.) registered a four-save shutout. 

Match Review
• Pingree challenged Sprague with a shot in the 15^th minute, but the freshman came through with a save to keep the game scoreless.
• Gordon broke through at the 22:02 mark, when senior defender Ben Gradert (Hudson, Ohio) sent in a cross from the right side and Williams headed the ball past Western New England junior goalkeeper Sam Brewer (Westford, Mass.) into the left side of the net.
• The Golden Bears were unable to put a shot on target the rest of the half, as the Fighting Scots led 1-0 at the break.
• In the 66^th minute, Western New England was denied an opportunity at equalizing as Remillard was thwarted on a pair of shots seven seconds apart, the second of which was kept out of the net by Gradert.
• The Golden Bears' final scoring chance came in the 80^th minute, when sophomore defender Bryan Doyle (Southington, Conn.) had his header saved by Sprague following a corner kick taken by Pingree.

Notes
• The two teams were even with 11 shots each, while Gordon held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
• Brewer saved all three of the shots he faced in the second half.
• Remillard finishes his career with the second highest goal total (53) in program history.
