Golden Bears Suffer First CCC Loss with 4-2 Setback to Wentworth

Senior Troy Remillard nets 50th career goal, 19th of season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 10, 2017) –
The Western New England University men's soccer team suffered its first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) loss of the season with a 4-2 setback to the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday afternoon at Suprenant Field.

Top Performers
• Sophomore forward Corey Brown (Somers, Conn.), who was named the CCC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career earlier in the day, recorded a goal and an assist.
• Senior forward Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) found the back of the net for the 19th time this season and 50th time in his career, becoming the third Golden Bear to reach the 50-goal mark.

• Wentworth junior Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) led the Leopards offensively with a hat trick, while sophomore Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J.) tallied his team-leading tenth goal of the season.

Match Review
• Martins staked Wentworth to a 1-0 lead 7:04 into the contest when he split a pair of Western New England defenders and fired a shot into the right corner of the net.
• The Golden Bears equalized just under three minutes later, when Brown raced into the box and had his cross deflected before heading the ball back towards Remillard, who was able to slip the ball past Wentworth sophomore goalkeeper Philip Chomicki (Dorchester, Mass.).
• The Leopards regained the lead in the 28th minute, as Martins headed home a cross from senior Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.).
• Wentworth led at the break, but Western New England pulled even again in the 65th minute, when Brown chased down a long pass from junior Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), beat a Wentworth defender and tucked a shot inside the far post.
• The Leopards answered with the goal that would stand as the game winner just 36 seconds later, however, as Martins completed his hat trick after a failed Western New England clearance.
• The visitors tacked on an insurance goal to claim a 4-2 lead in the 68th minute, and they would go on to win by the same margin.

Notes
• Brown has scored in three straight games, and the sophomore has recorded eight points over that same stretch.
• With 50 career goals, Remillard is two shy of matching Mark Staropoli for second on the program's all-time list. The senior needs ten goals to equal Tony Aquiar's program record of 60. With 19 goals this season, Remillard needs seven to match Aquiar's single-season record of 26, which was set in 1966.
• Wentworth outshot Western New England 14-11, but the Golden Bears held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
