Western New England advances to semifinals to take on Gordon

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 28, 2017) –
Senior forward Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) scored a penalty kick goal with 41 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the third-seeded Western New England University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over sixth-seeded Roger Williams University in the CCC Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Suprenant Field. 

With the win, Western New England (12-6-1) advances to the CCC semifinal round to take on second-seeded Gordon College on Tuesday in Wenham. The Fighting Scots defeated No. 7 seed Nichols in another quarterfinal contest on Saturday. Roger Williams' season ends at 9-7-4. 

Top Performers
• Remillard was the hero with his 22nd goal of the season, which was the difference in the contest.
• Junior goalkeeper Sam Brewer (Westford, Mass.) made five saves en route to his fifth clean sheet of the season.

• Roger Williams senior forward Kabine Conde (Philadelphia, Pa.) accounted for two of the Hawks' five shots on goal.

Match Review
• Western New England was held without a shot on goal during a scoreless first half.
• The Golden Bears had several opportunities to break through early in the second half, as junior Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), sophomore Bryan Doyle (Southington, Conn.) and freshman Brandon Stater (Torrington, Conn.) all put shots on target, but Roger Williams sophomore Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) came through with a trio of saves.
• Brewer made a pair of saves in the 68th and 69th minutes, before sophomore Ty Champagne (Watertown, Conn.) sent a shot just wide at the 72:06 mark.
• With the game still tied in the final minute, Western New England sophomore midfielder Arcel Kabongo-Ngoy (Franklin Square, N.Y.) was brought down in the corner of the 18-yard box, and the Golden Bears were awarded a penalty kick. Remillard stepped up and buried a high, hard shot into the center of the net as Geschickter dove to his right.

• The Golden Bears outshot Roger Williams 15-7, while the Hawks held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
• Remillard has scored seven goals over Western New England's last four CCC Tournament contests.
