Sophomore Ty Champagne scores game-winning goal late in first half
MILTON, Mass. (October 21, 2017) – The Western New England University men's soccer team moved into first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) standings with a 1-0 victory over Curry College on Saturday evening at Walter M. Katz Field.
Top Performers
• Sophomore midfielder Ty Champagne (Watertown, Conn.) gave the Golden Bears all the offense they would need with his goal late in the first half.
• Junior goalkeeper Sam Brewer (Westford, Mass.) made two saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season.
Match Review
• Both teams had scoring opportunities early, but came up empty. Western New England graduate midfielder Kory Caster (Wilbraham, Mass.) had his third minute shot saved by Curry senior Adam DiBrina (Sudbury, Ont.), before Brewer stopped Colonels senior defender Giancarlo Orsini's (Watertown, Conn.) header at the 3:41 mark.
• Champagne put the Golden Bears ahead for good with less than a minute remaining before halftime when he found the back of the net with an unassisted tally.
• Curry's only other shot on goal came in the 55th minute, when Brewer came through with a save on senior midfielder Ben Silvia's (Dartmouth, Mass.) attempt.
Notes
• A strong Western New England defensive effort allowed Curry to take just five shots all game. The Golden Bears outshot the Colonels 12-5, but Curry was able to earn eight corner kicks.
• Western New England's win combined with Endicott College's 1-0 loss at the University of New England pushed the Golden Bears ahead of the Gulls in the CCC standings.
• Champagne, who recorded a team-best three shots in the contest, found the back of the net for the second straight game.
