Men’s Ice Hockey Drops Non-Conference Contest to Johnson & Wales, 4-2

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – The Western New England University men's ice hockey team fell to Johnson & Wales University, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Lynch Arena.

Top Performers
Junior forward Nolan Zweep (Abbotsford, B.C.) and freshman forward John D'Aniello (Toms River, N.J.) provided the offense for the Golden Bears with one goal each.

Johnson & Wales was led by sophomore forward Jake Glod (Cumberland, R.I.), who scored two goals and added an assist.

Wildcats junior goaltender Mike Rockwell, Jr. (Poughquag, N.Y.) finished with 45 saves on 47 shots.

Game Review
JWU opened the scoring seven minutes into the contest when sophomore Austin Withycombe (Kensington, Conn.) scored from the left circle to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0. Rockwell, Jr. stopped all 15 of the shots he faced in the first period as the home team maintained its one-goal edge at intermission.

Early in the second period, D'Aniello found the back of the net on a feed from senior Dominic Blad (Springfield, Mass.) to tie the contest, but Glod put the Wildcats back in front six minutes later at the 9:07 mark of the second period.

Leading 2-1 heading into the third period, Johnson & Wales added to its advantage as Glod tallied his second goal of the game at 5:32 before freshman forward Jodi Legassie (Orrington, Maine) notched a power play tally with 8:41 remaining to make it 4-1.

The Golden Bears pulled to within 4-2 on a short-handed goal by Zweep with 3:30 left in regulation, but JWU held on late to secure the win.

• Western New England outshot JWU 47-34 and held a 44-37 advantage in the faceoff circle.
• Senior goalie Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) finished with 29 saves on 33 shots.
• Zweep has scored in four consecutive games and he leads the Golden Bears with 10 points this season.
