WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 8, 2020) – The Western New England University men's ice hockey team fell to Curry, 8-5, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday evening at the Olympia Ice Center.
Top Performers
Senior Billy Vizzo (Shelton, Conn.) and junior Joseph Thielen (Huntington Beach, Calif,) led the Colonels with two goals each. Junior Tyler Lindstrom Brooklyn Park, Minn.), sophomore Alex Ochterbeck (Dallas, Texas), junior Eetu Selanne (Coto de Caza, Calif.), and junior Michael Snow (Medford, Mass.) each scored a goal.
The golden Bears received goals from freshman Tyler Pohlig (Broomall, Pa.), junior Luciano Bucci (Franklin Square, N.Y.), junior Nolan Zweep (Abbotsford, B.C.), sophomore Connor Geshan (Oakton, Va.), and senior Corey Kennedy (Clemmons, N.C.).
Game Review
Curry got things going early in what eventually became a seven goal period. Lindstrom found the back of the net just under three minutes into the game. Western New England responded just under 11 minutes into the period when Pohlig scored a power play goal. The Golden Bears then struck again less than a minute late when Bucci struck the back of the net to give the Golden Bears a 2-1 lead.
Curry took the lead back when Thielen scored a power play goal and then Vizzo followed that up less than two minutes late to give the Colonels a 3-2 lead. The Golden Bears answered again when Zweep scored another power play goal for the Golden Bears. Geshan scored his first collegiate goal at the 17:26 mark in the first period to give the Golden Bears a 4-3 lead going into the second period.
Vizzo tied the game for Curry just a minute into the second period on a power play. Ochterbeck gave the lead back to the Colonels at the 8:26 mark in the second period. Kennedy responded for the Golden Bears midway through the period on another power play, giving Western New England their third power play goal of the night.
With the game tied 5-5 going into the third period, the Colonels scored three goals to take the win, getting goals from Thielen, Selanne on a power play, and Snow.
