No. 10 UNE Skates to 6-1 Win over Men’s Ice Hockey

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The No. 10 nationally ranked University of New England men's ice hockey team posted a 6-1 win over Western New England University on Saturday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Olympia Ice Center.

Top Performers
Western New England's lone goal was scored by senior defenseman Evan Lindquist (Amston, Conn.) with an assist from junior John O'Brien (Staten Island, N.Y.).

UNE was led by sophomore forward Austin Morgan (Novi, Mich.), who recorded two goals and one assist. Freshman forward Jake Fuss (Fairfield, Conn.) also found the back of the net twice for the Nor'easters, while junior goalie Ben Churchfield (Newcastle, England) finished with 21 saves on 22 shots.

Game Review
Fuss opened the scoring for the visitors 6:34 into the contest, when he deflected home a shot taken from the point by freshman defenseman Alex Sheehy (North Salem, N.Y.).

Later in the opening period, UNE added to its lead on the power play as Morgan took the puck the length of the ice and found the upper right corner of the net.

The Nor'easters scored two more goals in the second period to increase their advantage to 4-0. Freshman Jared Christy (Tustin, Calif.) tallied his second goal of the season midway through the frame, before junior Derek Mecrones (Medford, Mass.) found the back of the net at the 18:45 mark.

After UNE went up 5-0 early in the third period, Western New England broke through on Lindquist's power play goal with 5:22 left in the game. Lindquist received a pass from O'Brien and blasted a one-timer from the high slot off the post and into the net.

Fuss registered his second goal of the night just over a minute later to cap the scoring in the game.

• UNE outshot Western New England 56-23 and held a 35-34 edge in the faceoff circle.
• Western New England senior goalie Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) made 50 saves, his second career 50+ save performance.
