Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Nichols in Close Game

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 24, 2020) – The Western New England University men's ice hockey team fell 2-1 to Nichols in a close match on Friday evening at the Olympia Ice Center.

Top Performers
The goal scorers for the Bison were sophomores Curtis Carlson (Lakewood, N.Y.) and Justin Perron (Thetford Mines, Quebec).

The lone goal scorer for the Golden Bears was junior Nolan Zweep (Abbotsford, B.C.). Senior goaltender Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) produced 38 saves in the loss.

Game Review
There was no score in the first period, but Nichols had a 19-3 shot advantage for the period.

The Bison struck early in the second period, scoring on their first shot of the period just 28 seconds in. Carlson fired it past Carducci from the right circle. Junior Nate Foster (West Chazy, N.Y.) and sophomore Petr Miko (Zlin, Czech Republic) provided the assists on the goal.

The Golden Bears answered later in the period when Zweep struck the back of the net on a power play to tie the game at 1. Junior Adam Giacomin (Richmond Hill, Ont.) found Zweep in the front of the net, before Zweep turned and snuck it into the net.

The Bison scored the winner with under a minute remaining in regulation when Perron found the winner on a power play. Graduate student J.B. Baker (Columbia, Md.) found junior Filip Virgili (Malmo, Sweden) on the left circle, and Virgili passed it across to the right side, finding Perron. Perron took his time before sneaking it past Carducci in the top corner for the game winner.
