Western New England Finishes Second at City of Springfield Championship
Golden Bears defeat STCC & AIC, fall to Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 10, 2018) – The Western New England University wrestling team turned in a second place finish on Saturday at the City of Springfield Championship, hosted by Springfield College at the SC Field House.
The Golden Bears won two of three duals against their city rivals, with a 30-24 win over STCC, a 39-13 triumph over AIC, and a 24-17 loss to Springfield.
In the first match of the day, sophomore Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) got the Golden Bears off to a strong start against STCC as he pinned Victor Lopez at 5:47 of the 125-pound bout. STCC responded with three straight wins before sophomore Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) needed just 24 seconds to pin Michael Santamaria at 157. With the match tied 18-18 after the 174-pound bout, two straight STCC forfeits sealed the win for the Golden Bears.
Against Springfield in the second match of the day, Arborio again staked the Golden Bears to an early lead as he pinned Nicholas Derosa (4:29). The Pride used three straight decisions to pull ahead 9-6, before Monteiro defeated Kearney Gutierrez 2-1 to even the score. Springfield again surged ahead with wins at 165 and 174, but Western New England fought back with a Ryan Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.) decision at 184 and a John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) win by fall (1:51) at 197. In the decisive heavyweight bout, Springfield's Joe Fusco pinned Western New England sophomore Asim Waters (Middletown, Conn.) to seal the triumph for the Pride.
Western New England's final match of the day saw the Golden Bears defeat AIC handily. Arborio posted his third straight pin (0:51) against Ahmed Hernandez, while junior Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, Mass.) won by decision over Isaiah Collins at 174, and senior Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) pinned Raul Martinez (3:25) in the heavyweight bout.
