Sugermeyer & Boyle Honored by Massachusetts Chapter of National Wrestling Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 9, 2019) – Western New England University head wrestling coach Mike Sugermeyer and junior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) were honored by the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame during an awards ceremony at Noble & Greenough School in Dedham, Mass. on Sunday.

Sugermeyer was recognized as the Massachusetts College Coach of the Year, while Boyle earned Massachusetts College Wrestler of the Year honors.

Sugermeyer has overseen the resurgence of the Western New England wrestling program during his four years as head coach.

This past season, Sugermeyer's squad posted its second consecutive winning record in dual meet action and registered a program-best 15th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships in Roanoke, Virginia. Western New England sent multiple qualifiers (Boyle and sophomore Ryan Monteiro) to the national tournament for the first time since 1997-98. Boyle & Monteiro were among four place-winners at the NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament, along with sophomores Nick Arborio & Justin DeLucia.

Additionally, three Golden Bears (Boyle, Monteiro, and DeLucia) collected National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic honors, while five other student-athletes (Ryan Guers, Josh Nelson, Austin Roche, Jeff Suschana & DJ Tartsinis) garnered New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) academic recognition.

Boyle made history this season, as he became Western New England's first national champion in any sport with his first-place finish in the 184-pound weight class at the NCAA DIII Championships in Roanoke, Va. Boyle, who collected All-America honors for the second straight season, went 33-6 with 11 wins by fall during his junior campaign.
