Western New England Picks up 24-21 Win over Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 30, 2018) – The Western New England University wrestling team picked up a 24-21, dual meet victory over Rhode Island College on Friday night in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action at RIC's Recreation Center.

Juniors John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) and Ryan Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.) and sophomores Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.), Justin Delucia (Holbrook, N.Y.), and Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) all posted wins to lead the Golden Bears.

Arborio got Western New England off to a strong start as he registered an 11-0 major decision triumph over Daniel Murray at 125 to put the visitors ahead 4-0.

RIC got on the board with Stephen Masi's 10-6 decision over junior Austin Roche (Southborough, Mass.) at 133, but Delucia extended the Golden Bears' lead to 9-3 with a technical fall win over Francisco Roman at 141.

The back and forth continued as Samuel Lindblom pinned freshman Andrew Piedrahita (Westford, Mass.) at 149, before Monteiro answered for the Golden Bears with a win by fall (3:37) over Devante Rogers at 157.

The Anchormen tied the match at 15-15 when Zach Ford pinned freshman Jeffrey Suschana (Somers, Conn.) at 165, but Western New England took control with wins in the next two bouts.

At 174, Guers pinned Nathan Stemple (2:37) to make it 21-15 in favor of the Golden Bears. Boyle followed with a 10-6 decision over 2016-17 NCAA Qualifier Michael Gallagher as Western New England opened up a 24-15 advantage.

RIC stayed within striking distance as Travis Manick defeated senior Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) in a 4-2 decision at 197, and sophomore Dan Price (Nyack, N.Y.) lost a 2-1 decision over Jordan Zanni in the heavyweight bout to cap the match.
