Boyle will wrestle in national semifinals on Saturday morning

ROANOKE, Va. (March 8, 2019) – Junior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) represented the Western New England University wrestling team on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday at the Berglund Center.

Boyle claimed All-America honors for the second consecutive season and secured his spot in the 184-pound national semifinals with a 2-0 showing during Friday's action.

Boyle opened his day with a 3-1 decision over Rexx Hallyburton of Washington & Lee, before posting a 9-3 decision over Josh Edel (Coe) in the quarterfinals.

When Saturday morning's session gets underway at 10 a.m., Boyle will take on top-seeded Dylan Roth of Heidelberg with a spot in the 184-pound national championship bout on the line.

Boyle becomes the fourth Golden Bear in program history to earn multiple All-America honors. He joins Downes Athletic Hall of Famers Gary Solomon (4x), Brian Solomon (2x) and two-time Olympian Rodney Smith (2x).

Also competing for Western New England was Monteiro, who made his NCAA Championship debut. Monteiro went 0-2 at 157 pounds, as he was pinned by sixth-seeded Bradan Birt (Milliken) in his first bout, before dropping a 3-1 decision to Dylan Dwyer of NYU.

Monteiro's 2018-19 campaign comes to a close with a record of 24-6.
