Boyle, Monteiro & DeLucia Among Eight Golden Bears Honored by NWCA & NEWA
Trio earns NWCA All-Academic recognition, Boyle named NEWA Co-Wrestler of the Year
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 26, 2019) – Eight members of the Western New England University wrestling team were recognized with end of season awards from the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA).
Junior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) headlined Western New England's list of honorees, as he received NWCA All-Academic accolades in addition to being named the NEWA Co-Wrestler of the Year. Boyle was also an All-NEWA first team selection and a NEWA All-Academic performer.
The Rowley, Mass. native made history this season, as he became Western New England's first national champion in any sport with his first place finish in the 184-pound weight class at the NCAA DIII Championships in Roanoke, Va. Boyle, who collected All-America honors for the second straight season, went 33-6 with 11 wins by fall during his junior campaign.
Earning NWCA All-Academic recognition along with Boyle were junior Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.).
Monteiro, an All-NEWA second team selection, went 24-6 this season and finished second at 157 pounds at the NCAA Northeast Regional to earn his first trip to the NCAA DIII Championships.
DeLucia (141 pounds) and sophomore Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) (125 pounds) placed seventh and fifth, respectively, at the Northeast Regional on their way to claiming All-NEWA honorable mention recognition. DeLucia posted a 19-13 record in his first season as a Golden Bear, while Arborio turned in a 29-8 mark with seven pins, good for second on the team behind Boyle.
Freshman Jeffrey Suschana (Somers, Conn.) landed on the NEWA All-Rookie Team following a solid campaign in which he went 17-16 with six wins by fall.
Finally, Boyle, DeLucia, Monteiro and Suschana garnered NEWA All-Academic honors, along with senior Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) and juniors Ryan Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.), Austin Roche (Southborough, Mass.) and DJ Tartsinis (Colchester, Conn.).
