Golden Bears Defeat Plymouth State on Senior Day, 37-3

Nelson wins 2-0 decision in final home bout

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 9, 2019) – The Western New England University wrestling team posted a 37-3 senior day victory over Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Before the start of the match, Western New England honored senior Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) and junior Ryan Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.) for their contributions to the wrestling program.

After a double forfeit in the 125-pound bout, Western New England got off to a strong start as sophomore Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) registered an 18-3 technical fall victory over Will Jarvis at 133.

Sophomore Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.) accepted a forfeit at 141, before Plymouth State got on the board courtesy of Steven Abusheery's 6-4 decision over freshman Andrew Piedrahita (Westford, Mass.) at 149.

The Golden Bears won the final six bouts, however, beginning with sophomore Ryan Monteiro's (Wilbraham, Mass.) 15-0 technical fall victory over Colby Ferreti at 157.

Freshman Jeffrey Suschana (Somers, Conn.) earned a 7-5 overtime decision against Bill Dunn at 165, and junior Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, Mass.) won by forfeit at 174.

In the final three matchups, junior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) picked up an 8-2 decision over Dylan da Silva at 184, Nelson defeated Matt Froio 2-0 at 197, and sophomore Dan Price (Nyack, N.Y.) capped the match with a first round pin against Derek Sardella in the heavyweight bout.

With its dual match schedule complete, Western New England (9-7) will compete at the NEWA Futures Tournament next Sunday before gearing up for the NCAA Northeast Regionals the weekend of February 23-24.
