Boyle & Monteiro Secure Semifinal Berths on Opening Day of NCAA Northeast Regional
Golden Bears in 11th place in 17-team field
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (February 23, 2019) – Four members of the Western New England University wrestling team secured top-eight finishes in their respective weight classes on the first day of the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday at the Wildcat Center on the campus of Johnson & Wales University.
Junior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) both went 2-0 on the day at 184 and 157 pounds, respectively, to reach Sunday's semifinal round.
Boyle opened the tournament by pinning Luke Anselmi of Williams College, before registering a 6-2 decision over Ryan DeLoach of Roger Williams. Boyle will take on WPI's Dan Wensley in the semifinals tomorrow.
Monteiro posted a pair of wins by decision, first defeating Kevin Lyskawa (Trinity College) 9-3, and then edging Thomas Grippi of JWU by a 6-4 score in the quarterfinals. Monteiro will be matched up with Christian Gosch (Coast Guard) in the semifinals.
With a win in the semifinals tomorrow, Boyle & Monteiro will clinch a top-3 finish and a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship in two weekends in Roanoke, Va.
Two other Golden Bears are still alive after the opening day of the regional – sophomore Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) at 125 pounds and sophomore Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.) at 141.
Arborio won by technical fall over Norwich's Dylan Marone before dropping his second bout to Diego Santiago of New England College. He then won a 17-5 major decision over Daniel Murphy (Rhode Island College) and will face David Yeh (Williams) when action resumes tomorrow.
DeLucia also went 2-1, starting the day with a 13-7 decision over Franky Roman (Rhode Island College). He lost his second bout to JWU's Joseph Ferinde, but stayed alive by defeating Ryan Pro (NEC). DeLucia will take on JD Fitzpatrick (Coast Guard) tomorrow.
Sunday's action gets underway with the championship semifinals at 10 a.m.
