No. 12 WPI Defeats Western New England in Home Opener, 30-12

Arborio, Roche & DeLucia post wins for Golden Bears

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 20, 2018) – The Western New England University wrestling team was defeated by No. 12 ranked Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 30-12, in the Golden Bears' home opener on Tuesday night at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Western New England got off to a strong start with wins in the first three bouts to open up a 12-0 lead.

Sophomore Nicholas Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) opened the match with a 17-1 major decision victory over Michael Aquino at 125, and junior Austin Roche (Southborough, Mass.) followed with a 4-2 decision over Andrew Ellis at 133.

At 141, sophomore Justin Delucia (Holbrook, N.Y.) registered a 13-2 major decision triumph over Zach Harris.

It was all WPI the rest of the way, however, as the Engineers took the final seven bouts.

Peter Nash cut WPI's deficit in half (12-6) as he pinned freshman Andrew Piedrahita (Westford, Mass.) at 149, and after Tyler Marsh picked up a 5-4 decision over sophomore Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) at 157, the Engineers took the lead for good (15-12) with Ronan Ball's pin of freshman Jeff Suschana (Somers, Conn.) at 165.

WPI continued to pull away late with wins by decision at 174, 184, and 197. Austin Shrewsbury capped the win for the Engineers as he pinned freshman Akhmet Azizov (Chicopee, Mass.) in the heavyweight bout.
