Claflin & Brown score as Golden Bears win third straight game

WESTFIELD, Mass. (September 11, 2019) – The Western New England University men's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games with a 2-0 shutout victory over Westfield State University on Wednesday night at Alumni Field.

Top Performers
Seniors Brendan Claflin (Burlington, Mass.) and Corey Brown (Somers, Conn.) both scored for the Golden Bears, while senior goalkeeper Dylan Husted (South Deerfield, Mass.) stopped one shot to earn his second consecutive clean sheet.

Game Review
Claflin put Western New England in front in the 26th minute with the goal that would stand as the game winner. Westfield State goalkeeper Griffin Brown (Southborough, Mass.) challenged a long entry pass at the edge of the box, punching the ball away from danger momentarily. The ball landed at the feet of Claflin, however, and he lobbed a shot over Brown's head and into the back of the net.

Midway through the second half, the Owls had their lone scoring opportunity as Mohamed Fofana (Pittsfield, Mass.) challenged Husted from outside the box, but the Western New England keeper saved the attempt to preserve the visitors' 1-0 edge.

With just 4:44 left in the contest, Brown provided the Golden Bears with some insurance, as he corralled a rebound following a shot by senior Charlie Argyle (Marshfield, Mass.) and tucked the ball inside the left post to make it 2-0.

Notes
• Western New England outshot Westfield State 15-5, and the Golden Bears held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
• Brown, Claflin & Argyle are tied for the team lead with two goals each through four games.
