Men’s Soccer Blanks Husson 2-0 in Non-Conference Finale

BANGOR, Maine (October 20, 2019) – The Western New England University men's soccer team wrapped up its non-conference slate with a 2-0 victory over Husson University on Sunday afternoon at Boucher Field.

Top Performers
Sophomores Zach Allard (Lebanon, Conn.) and Jeremy Obrecht (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) scored one goal each to lead the Golden Bears offensively, while freshman goalie Ben Mielnikowski (Feeding Hills, Mass.) registered a five-save shutout.

Game Review
The Golden Bears opened the scoring in the 34th minute, after Husson sophomore goalie Benjamin Powell (Frankfort, Maine) made a save on a header attempt by Western New England freshman Bryan Atimbo (Chicopee, Mass.). Allard was the beneficiary of Atimbo's initial chance, as he collected the rebound and notched his first career goal.

Western New England, which held a 1-0 lead at the break, was able to double its advantage in the 68th minute when Obrecht tallied his first career goal, an unassisted strike.

The Golden Bears nearly extended their lead in the 75th minute, when freshman Caleb Tarbell (Windsor Locks, Conn.) hit the post, but the 2-0 score held up the rest of the way.

• Western New England outshot Husson 19-9 and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
• Mielnikowski hasn't surrendered a goal in five appearances and three starts this season, making nine saves in over 300 minutes of action.

Western New England (11-4-1) plays its third consecutive road game on Wednesday night at Endicott. Husson (5-11) is also in action on Wednesday, as the Eagles remain at home to host Thomas at 6 p.m.
