Golden Bears Defeat New England College in Home Opener, 37-6

Western New England records five pins en route to first win of 2016-17 campaign

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (December 9, 2016) – The Western New England University wrestling team recorded a 37-6 victory over New England College this evening in its home opener at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Freshman Chase LaRusso (Enfield, Conn.) set the tone for the Golden Bears at 157 pounds, winning by fall over New England College freshman Pat Kelly (South Brunswick, N.J.) at 2:19.

Freshman Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, Mass.) extended Western New England's lead to 10-0 with his 14-5 major decision victory over freshman Avery Santiago (Salem, N.H.) in the 165 pound bout, while sophomore Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) and freshman John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) followed with consecutive pins at 174 (2:22) and 184 (0:57), respectively, as the Golden Bears opened up a 22-0 advantage.

Senior captain Brian Donovan (Manchester, Conn.) picked up a 5-1 decision over senior Ky Young (Tulsa, Okla.) at 197, while freshman Nick Fortini (Deer Park, N.Y.) won by fall (1:43) over sophomore Charles Levine (Windham, N.H.) at 285.

The Pilgrims got on the board with a forfeit at 125, before freshman Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) registered Western New England's fifth and final fall of the night at 133, defeating freshman Eric Wall (Peterborough, N.H.) in 1:30 to extend the final margin to 37-6.

Western New England (1-1) will be back in action on Sunday with a quad at Bridgewater State, while New England College (0-2) is off until January 7, when the Pilgrims travel to Roger Williams for the Scott Viera Invitational.
