Golden Bears Compete at NEWA Futures Tournament
Fortini places second overall in heavyweight bracket
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (February 19, 2017) – The Western New England University wrestling team returned to action today at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament, hosted by Johnson & Wales University.
Top Performers
• Freshman Nick Fortini (Deer Park, N.Y.) provided the highlight of the day for the Golden Bears, going 3-1 and placed second in the heavyweight bracket. Fortini won by fall (2:40) over Hussein Kanaan of Norwich in his first match, before picking up a 1-0 decision over Jake Kruger of Roger Williams. He reached the final with a 6-3 decision over WPI's Logan Mendelson, but dropped a 3-1 decision to Roger Williams sophomore Adam Patsun in the championship.
• Freshmen Taylor Pfaff (Albany, N.Y.) and Austin Roche (Southborough, Mass.) both went 2-2 in the 157 pound bracket.
