Brian Donovan Recognized as NWCA Scholar All-American, Golden Bears Earn Scholar Team Honors

Western New England's 3.20 team GPA ranks 22nd in NCAA DIII

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 21, 2017) – Senior Brian Donovan (Manchester, Conn.) of the Western New England University wrestling team has earned Scholar All-America honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), while the Golden Bears were recognized as an NWCA Scholar Team, it was announced last week.

Donovan, a marketing-communication/advertising major with a 3.38 cumulative grade point average, went 27-12 during his senior campaign while wrestling at the 197-pound weight class. The Machester, Conn. native is among 173 NCAA Division III wrestlers to earn Scholar All-America accolades from the NCAA.

Additionally, the Golden Bears garnered NWCA Scholar Team honors after posting a team GPA of 3.20, which ranks 22nd out of over 100 NCAA DIII wrestling programs.

To earn individual Scholar All-American honors, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average for the previous full academic year. Transfers and freshmen are eligible if they've been in residence at their current institution beginning in the fall of 2016. On the competition side, wrestlers much be a national qualifier in 2016-17 and have a minimum win percentage of at least .500. Additionally, wrestlers can also be considered if they placed in the top six at their respective regional tournament, have a win percentage of .500 or better and competed in half of the institution's scheduled competition in NCAA championship events. A wrestler can also be considered if they have a win percentage of .670 or better and competed in half of the institution's scheduled NCAA events.
