Western New England Goes 1-2 at Bridgewater State Quad

Donovan leads Golden Bears with pair of wins at 197

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (December 11, 2016) – The Western New England University wrestling team posted a 1-2 record earlier today at a quad meet hosted by Bridgewater State University. The Golden Bears defeated host Bridgewater State 39-9, but fell to the University of Southern Maine (32-9) and Roger Williams University (44-0).

Top Performers
Senior Brian Donovan (Manchester, Conn.) led the way for Western New England, going 2-1 in his three bouts at 197 pounds. Both of Donovan's wins came by fall, while the senior lost a close 3-1 decision to Christopher Francis of Roger Williams.

Southern Maine 32, Western New England 9
The Huskies opened up a 25-0 lead over the Golden Bears, before sophomore Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) got Western New England on the board with a 9-5 decision over Josh Smith at 174. Donovan accounted for the team's other six points with his pin of Steven Corio, but the Golden Bears were unable to overcome their large deficit. 

Western New England 39, Bridgewater State 9
Western New England registered five pins in its second match of the day, with Donovan, juniors Dom Liquori (Springfield, Mass.), Tim McLinden (Plaistow, N.H.) and Lamont Wallace (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and freshman John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) all winning by fall. Freshman Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) also picked up a win with his 2-1 decision over Logan Larsen at 141.

Roger Williams 44, Western New England 0
The Golden Bears were handed their second defeat of the day against Roger Williams, as the Hawks claimed all ten bouts with one win coming by forfeit at 125. Boyle dropped a 9-6 decision to Joe Albina at 174, and Donovan came up just short against Francis, suffering a 3-1 defeat to Francis.
