Western New England Places Second at City of Springfield Championship

Donovan, McLinden and Goodall each go 3-0 for Golden Bears

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 1, 2017) – The Western New England University wrestling team turned in a second place finish at the City of Springfield Championship this evening at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Western New England opened the night with a 37-15 win over American International College, before posting a 34-12 triumph over Springfield Technical Community College. The Golden Bears fell to Springfield College, 30-12, in the finale, as the Pride claimed the city title.

Top Performers
• Senior captain Brian Donovan (Manchester, Conn.) went 3-0 on the night at 197 pounds and was one of three Golden Bears to register a win against Springfield with his pin of Jake Kennedy (4:50).
• Junior Tim McLinden (Plaistow, N.H.) and freshman Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, Mass.) also posted perfect 3-0 records at 133 and 165, respectively, while freshman Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) picked up a pair of major decision victories at 141.

Western New England 37, American International College 15
Western New England won two of the three contested bouts against the Yellow Jackets en route to a 37-15 triumph in tonight's opener. Junior Mike Garone (Melville, N.Y.) got it started with a 6-2 decision over Brian LaValley at 125, and Starr posted a 12-4 major decision over Christian Echevarria at 141. Western New England led 37-12 before Jenard Rosemond capped the match with a 4-0 decision over freshman Nick Fortini (Deer Park, N.Y.).

Western New England 34, Springfield Technical Community College 12
After an early pin by STCC's Christian Antoine at 125, Western New England tied the match with a forfeit and pulled ahead for good when Starr registered a 9-0 major decision victory over Enrique Cuevas. Junior Lamont Wallace (New Rochelle, N.Y.) won by fall (5:55) over Austin Kirby at 157, while Goodall and sophomore Josh Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) picked up wins by decision at 165 and 174, respectively.  

Springfield College 30, Western New England 12
Devin Marino got the Pride out to a 5-0 lead with his win by technical fall over Garone, but McLinden followed with a 5-2 decision over Nick DeRosa to get the Golden Bears on the board. After three straight Springfield wins extended the Pride's lead to 17-3, Goodall registered a 7-2 decision over Zachary Scheetz for his third win of the night. Western New England's other victory came from Donovan, who pinned Kennedy in the 197-pound bout.
