Golden Bears Fall to Bridgewater State and Roger Williams

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 10, 2018) – The Western New England University wrestling team fell to both Bridgewater State University and Roger Williams University in a tri-match on Wednesday afternoon at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

The Golden Bears opened up a quick 12-0 lead as freshman Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) won by forfeit at 125 and senior Tim McLinden (Plaistow, N.H.) pinned Andrew Valdina (6:57) at 133. Devin Winn got Bridgewater State on the board with a 6-4 decision over sophomore Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) at 141, but senior Lamont Wallace (New Rochelle, N.Y.) gave Western New England a 16-3 lead with his 8-0 major decision over Logan Larsen at 149.

The Bears won the next four bouts, however, to claim a 25-16 advantage heading into the final two contests. Senior Andrew Cole (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) won by technical fall over Jerome Williams at 197 to get the Golden Bears back to within four, but Tom Arseneault sealed the win for Bridgewater State with a 1-0 decision over sophomore Nick Fortini (Deer Park, N.Y.) in the heavyweight matchup.
