Golden Bears Compete at NCAA Northeast Regional Championships

Guers & Boyle reach semifinals after going 2-0 on Saturday

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 24, 2018) – Ten members of the Western New England University wrestling team competed on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute at WPI's  Sports & Recreation Center. 

Six Golden Bears remain in contention in their respective weight class at the conclusion of Saturday's action, led by sophomores Ryan Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.) and John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.), who both went 2-0 to reach the semifinals at 174 and 184 pounds.

As a team, Western New England is in ninth place in the 17-team field with a score of 36. Complete team results are available here.

Freshman Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) defeated Tyler Tweedie of New England College with a 17-1 technical fall (3:58) in his first bout of the day, before suffering a 16-0 technical fall defeat at the hands of Johnson & Wales' Jay Albis. Arborio remained in the tournament after recording another technical fall (18-3) against Michael Titus of Plymouth State in 2:03.

Senior Tim McLinden (Plaistow, N.H.) opened the day by upsetting Tristan Haviland of Roger Williams with a 3-2 decision. He then dropped a 5-3 decision to Owen McClave of Coast Guard, but stayed alive with a 4-3 overtime win against Ben Morton of Williams College.

Sophomore Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) was pinned by 2016-17 All-American Joseph Ferinde of Johnson & Wales in his first match, before rebounding with a win by fall over Matthew McGowan of Coast Guard (3:29). Starr was eliminated from the tournament, however, with a 5-3 decision against Derek Bohle of Springfield College.

Senior Lamont Wallace (New Rochelle, N.Y.) lost an 8-1 decision to Carter Armendarez of Wesleyan and a 6-5 decision to Bridgewater State's Fox Maxwell.

Freshman Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) dropped a 6-0 decision to Tyler Gazaway of Roger Williams in his first bout, before posting consecutive victories over John Reilly of Trinity College (10-6 Decision) and Edward Pierce of Wesleyan (9-5 Decision).

Sophomore Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, Mass.) went 1-2 on the day with a 5-2 decision over Nicholas Gould of Rhode Island College. Goodall's season ended with an 8-0 major decision loss to Castleton's Jared Costa.

Guers booked his trip to the semifinals with a 2-0 showing on Saturday, as he defeated Trinity College's Stephen Cerrone by fall (0:58) before posting a 2-1 decision over Michael Gargano of Johnson & Wales.

Boyle bulldozed his way to the semifinal round as well, as he registered a 12-5 decision against Nicholas Coppola of Rhode Island College, and a 10-1 major decision triumph over Connor Humphries of Roger Williams.

Senior Andrew Cole (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) was sent to the consolation bracket after he was pinned by Michael Fernandes of Roger Williams (6:48). Cole picked up a 13-2 major decision victory over Norwich's Satchel Stauffer, but he was eliminated with a 3-2 overtime loss to Cedrick Stephens of Castleton.

After being pinned in his first bout of the day, senior Dom Liquori (Springfield, Mass.) staved off elimination with a win by fall (0:36) against Jonathan Jividen of New England College, and an 8-2 decision over Santino Pelusi of NYU.

Second day action at WPI continues on Sunday at 10 am.Eight wrestlers remain in each weight class, with four in the winner's bracket and four in the consolation bracket. With the top three in each weight class headed to the Nationals in two weeks in Cleveland, several paths exist for qualification. For those in the winner's bracket (Boyle & Guers), a win in the semifinal match will punch their ticket, while a loss will require two wins later in the today to qualify. Student-athletes in the consolation bracket (Arborio, McLinden, Monteiro, Liquori) will need to win three bouts on Sunday to secure a spot in Cleveland.
