Frappier Nets Pair of Second Half Goals as Golden Bears Defeat New Paltz in Home Opener, 3-1

Frappier, freshman Morgan Smith both score first career goals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 9, 2017) – Led by a pair of second half goals from sophomore forward Alicia Frappier (Granby, Mass.), the Western New England University women's soccer team defeated SUNY New Paltz, 3-1, in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at Suprenant Field.   

Top Performers
• Making her collegiate debut, Frappier snapped a 1-1 tie in the 75th minute before finding the back of the net again just over five minutes later.
• Freshman Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) also scored her first career goal, staking the Golden Bears to a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute.  

• Senior Julia Friedman (Centerport, N.Y.) scored the equalizer for New Paltz in the 60th minute.

Match Review
• Smith got the Golden Bears on the board at the 27:34 mark when she buried a shot into the lower left corner of the net, past the reach of New Paltz freshman goalkeeper Megan Tornatore (Glen Head, N.Y.).
• Western New England led 1-0 at the break, but New Paltz leveled the contest in the 60th minute when Friedman finished at the goalmouth after receiving a cross from senior Danielle Grossi (Sayville, N.Y.).
• The Golden Bears capitalized on a mistake by Tornatore at the 74:30 mark, as the freshman turned the ball over on a failed clearance and Frappier lofted a shot over her head to give Western New England a 2-1 advantage.
• Frappier then secured an insurance goal for the Golden Bears 5:08 later, when she collected a rebound following a free kick by sophomore Amanda Gagnon (Newington, Conn.) and sent a shot in to the left side of the net.

Notes
• Western New England outshot New Paltz 15-8, but the Hawks held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) made three saves on the four shots that she faced.

Western New England (1-2-1) hosts Mount Holyoke on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., while New Paltz (2-2) travels to Bard on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup.
