Golden Bears Improve to 5-1 in CCC Play with 2-1 Triumph at Eastern Nazarene

Freshman Morgan Smith nets game-winning goal in 58th minute

QUINCY, Mass. (October 14, 2017) –
The Western New England University women's soccer team improved to 5-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a 2-1 victory over Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday afternoon at Bradley Field.

Top Performers
• Freshman Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal, her team-leading fourth of the season, early in the second half.
• Senior Maddie Morgan (Upton, Mass.) gave the Golden Bears an early lead with her first goal of the season.

• Senior Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.) netted the equalizer for Eastern Nazarene, her tenth this fall.

Match Review
• Morgan staked Western New England to a 1-0 lead 6:36 into the contest with a long shot over Eastern Nazarene sophomore goalkeeper Michaela Connors (Norwell, Mass.).
• The Lions pulled even in the 31st minute, when Couite scored on a volley at the back post on a feed from senior Alexis Schmidt (North Smithfield, R.I.).
• Senior Iman Shehemi (Feeding Hills, Mass.) put two shots on target late in the half, but Connors saved both to keep the score tied heading into the break.
• The Golden Bears continued to attack early in the second half, as Smith fired a shot off the post in the 48th minute. The freshman then put Western New England ahead for good less than ten minutes later, as she scored on a breakaway at the 57:26 mark.
• Western New England nearly added to its lead in the 84th minute, when senior Brooke Labrie (Granby, Mass.) ripped a shot off the crossbar.

Notes
• The Golden Bears held a commanding 18-4 shot advantage and also recorded four corner kicks without surrendering one to the Lions.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) made one save in the victory.
• Smith has scored in two consecutive games and three of the last five overall.

Western New England (7-6-2, 5-1 CCC) hosts Roger Williams on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. for its final regular season contest at Suprenant Field, while Eastern Nazarene (6-9, 1-5 CCC) plays Gordon on Wednesday.
