Wrestling Splits in City of Springfield Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 13, 2021) – Western New England Wrestling hosted the City of Springfield Championships earlier today where they opened the day with a 26-23 win over American International College and then dropped to Springfield 33-13.

Match One: vs. American International

In their first match of the day, the Golden Bears opened at the 165-pound weight class. Luke Pinzino took the mat for Western New England where he faced Dylan Kasperzyk. Pinzino fought for a fall in 5:52 to earn the first six points for the Golden Bears. Next on the mat was CJ Glaropoulos for the Golden Bears and Theran Vanase for AIC at 174. Glaropoulos recorded the second fall for the Golden Bears in just 52 seconds to put WNE up 12-0. Cory Grifka defeated Matt Bremner 10-0 in a major decision for Western New England to score four more points. The Golden Bears continued their win streak with Darby McLaughlin defeating Markys Lissaint 14-3 at 197 for four more points for Western New England to lead 20-0. American International earned their first win at heavyweight with a 5-3 decision to put their first three points on the board. The Yellow Jackets continued their momentum into the 125-pound match where they won via tech fall to earn five more points. The Golden Bears led 20-8 when Nicholas Arborio took the mat at 133 and pinned Aaron Morocho in 4:38 to earn six more points for WNE (26-8). The Yellow Jackets won the next three matches, 141 via a 5-3 decision, 149 via a fall in 2:05 and 157 via a fall in 5:35 to score a total of 15 points. The Golden Bears narrowly defeated the Yellow Jackets 26-23 to earn their first dual victory of the season.

Match Two: vs. Springfield

The Golden Bears second match of the day against Springfield opened at the 141-pound weight class. Chris Trelli wrestled for Springfield while Colby Reilly took the mat for the Golden Bears. Trelli won with a 4-0 decision to score the first three points of the match. Springfield then went on a winning streak and won the next three weight classes to take a 15-0 lead. Glaropoulos ended the winning for Springfield defeating Casey Allen in a 5-0 decision to score the Golden Bears first three points of the match. After falling at 184, McLaughlin bounced back for WNE with a 19-8 major decision victory over Deren Cercicioglu to score four more points. The Golden Bears now trailed the Pride 21-7. The Pride won the next two matches at 285 and 125 before Arborio notched his second win of the day with a forfeit for six points. The Golden Bears dropped the second set 33-13.
