Wrestling Travels to NEWA Futures Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Western New England men's wrestling team sent out 18 of their student athletes to compete at the NEWA Futured Tournament, hosted by Johnson and Wales University (R.I.) on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears (47.5 points) finished in 8th place out of 14 teams while Castleton University claimed victory in the tournament, finishing with 210 points. 

How it Happened:

First year James Dougherty (Charlestown, R.I.) turned out an impressive showing for the Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon, grabbing 12 points in six matches, finishing in fourth place in the 165 lb. weight class. Dougherty received a bye in the championship first round before competing against Daniel Brown of Rhode Island College, taking a major decision victory (10-0) over Brown in the championship second round. In the quarterfinal match, Doughterty defeated Luis Perez of Wesleyan (Conn.) University by a 6-3 decision to move into the semi-final round. Dougherty would drop the semifinal match, though would rebound in the consolation bracket, defeating Anthony Ostrander on a 4-0 decision to head into the third-place match before falling via 9-5 decision, taking fourth in the weight class. 

Jaylen Hawkins (Danbury, Conn.) finished with four wins in six matches for the Golden Bears in the 174 lb. weight class. Hawkins would earn the Golden Bears 10.5 points on the afternoon, taking down Dylan Reynolds via tech-fall (17-1) in the championship second round, while also taking victories over Jonah Potter of WPI (TF 17-1) and Chris Ludwig of New England College (TF 18-2).  

In the 184 lb. weight class, Tyreece Cherival would score ten points to add to the Golden Bears total, going 4-2 on the afternoon. Cherival defeated Jeremias Collazo of Bridgewater State on a 10-9 decision, before coming up victorious in the championship second round over Timothy Smale of Southern Maine on a 9-8 decsion victory. Cherival fell in the quarterfinal round before reaching the 5th/6th place match, finishing in 6th place, taking four victories on the night. 

In the 165 lb. weight class, sophomore Adam Marquis (Atkinson, N.H.) collected seven points for the Golden Bears, picking up a decision win over Ethan Palanca of Castleton University before collecting a pinfall victory over Henri Kuntz of Southern Maine. 

Darius Grant (Bethlehem, Pa.) closed out his Golden Bear career by earning two points for WNE, winning two matches on the afternoon. Senior teammate Mitchell Pardi (South Windsor, Conn.) also completed his career on the mats this afternoon, collecting a victory over D'ante Silva via pinfall in 2:02.
