Wrestling Places Three at Williams Open

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (January 10, 2022) – The Western New England University wrestling team opened their 2022 schedule at Williams College, at the Williams Open over the weekend. The Golden Bears placed three medalists in the five team meet. 

How it Happened: 

The Golden Bears got the match started with the 125 lb. weight class when Nick Arborio won via tech fall (18-0) over Ari Dinerman of Roger Williams University in the quarterfinal match. Arborio would move into the semifinal match and walked off the mat by yet again defeating Roger Williams University, this time Ben Dubois, via tech fall (21-5). With the win of Dubois, Arborio would move into the first-place match where he would face David Yeh from Williams College. Arborio would win by major decision (13-1) over Yeh to take first place in the 125 lb. weight class. 

Cameron Hines competed for the Golden Bears at 149 and fell in the quarterfinal match the Tagan Welch of Roger Williams University via fall in 1:34. Hines would receive a bye during the first round of the consolation matches, though would fall in the semifinal match to Andrew Maiorini of Wesleyan (Conn.) University via a 5-0 decision. 

Lucas Pinzino would take to the mat in the 157 lb. weight class and received a bye to open his afternoon. Pinzino would take down Cameron Wooldridge of Norwich University via major decision (12-4) to move into the first-place match. Pinzino would fall in the first-place match to Albert Xing of Williams College via a 5-4 decision, earning second place for the weight class. 

Western New England's Griffin Ostrom would wrestle the 285 and take town Thomas Barfield in the quarterfinal match via fall in 1:25. Ostrom would be defeated by Thomas Goodwin from Williams College on a 6-0 decision to move into the consolation bracket. Ostrom would come out of the consolation bracket as the champion, defeating Owen Verespy of Wesleyan (Conn.) University and Thomas Barfield of Norwich University via fall in 2:17.
