Wrestling Comes Up Short at Wesleyan University

WESLEYAN, Conn. (February 12, 2022) – After defeating WPI less than 24 hours ago, the Western New England University men's wrestling team traveled to Wesleyan (Conn.) University to take on the Cardinals in a match. The Golden Bears pulled out three wins in the 12 matches, falling to the Cardinals 28-14. 

How it Happened:
As he did on Friday night, Nick Arborio would take a victory, this time over Shailen Savur via major decsion in the 125 lb. weight class to give Western New England four early points. The Golden Bears saw Corey Cope win the 133 lb. weight class, defeating Max Martinez via pinfall in 1:28, just before the midway mark of the first round. 

The Golden Bears were unable to collect wins in the middle matches of the afternoon as Colby Reilly would just be bumped off the victory after falling in a 4-2 decision in the 141 lb. weight class. Cameron Hines fell in the 149 lb. weight class to Dario Molina on a 9-3 decision, giving the Cardinals three points. Lucas Pinzino would be knocked off on a 5-4 decision by Aaron Goodman to earn Wesleyan three added points. 

Sean Monteiro would be unable to come up with a win as he was taken down via fall in 1:19 to Jack Reusing in the 165 lb. weight class, giving Wesleyan the full six points to add to their score, which stood at 15-10 in favor of the home team. Christian Glaropoulos would drop a major decision victory for Marco Gaita in the 174 lb. weight class while Tyreece Cherival would come up short in the second round in his 184 lb. weight class match with Duncan Kreutter, falling in 4:55. Darby McLaughlin would pick up his second win in two days with a major decision victory over Josh Khoshayev, 12-4 to give WNE four points, putting them at 14 total for the match. Griffin Ostrom would be defeated via a 7-6 decision in the 285 lb. weight class as Kolton Gagnon would pull out the victory. Ultimately, the Golden Bears would fall by a final score of 28-14.
