Wrestling Turns Out Impressive Showing at Trinity Quads

HARTFORD, Conn. (February 5, 2022) – The Western New England University men's wrestling team took on the University of Southern Maine, Plymouth State University and the hosting Trinity (Conn.) University Bantams in the Trinity Quads on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears finished with a 2-1 record on the day while Nick Arborio, Lucas Pinzino, Darby McLaughlin, and Griffin Ostrom turned out undefeated on the mat. 

How it Happened:

Western New England met with the Huskies form the University of Southern Maine to open the afternoon. WNE's Nick Arborio started the 125 lb. weight class with a tech-fall victory over Antoine Grace in 3:50 with a count of 15-0 in the win. The Golden Bears would win three matches out of the gates with Corey Cope winning 9-3 in a decision over Ethan Ford and Colby Reilly took care of Southern Maine's Kevin Moore on the mat by a 6-3 decision victory. Also winning for the Golden Bears in their first match was Lucas Pinzino, who defeated Jeremy Sendrowski by a 9-5 decision, Sean Monteiro who snuck by David Kurker on a 3-2 decision, and Darby McLaughlin, who won via tech-fall in 2:24 over Nick Beebe. In total, Western New England would defeat Southern Maine 23-15. 

The Golden Bears would then meet the hosting Trinity (Conn.) University Bantams for the second match of the afternoon. Arborio, Pinzino, McLaughlin, and Griffin Ostrom would come out victorious for the Golden Bears as they were clipped by Trinity by a final score of 30-22. 

All ten Golden Bears who wrestled on the afternoon got a victory against Plymouth State University, as the Golden Bears swept the table with the Panthers. Arborio picked up a forfeit win, as did Cope, Charles Maloy, and Ostrom. Colby Reilly would take down Cody Giaccone in a fall win in 1:29. Cameron Hines defeated Tyler O'Mara in an 11-7 decision, while Pinzino was able to defeat Trevor O'Mara on a 16-4 decision. Monteiro took down Ty Muller on a fall in 2:29 to pick up the points for WNE. Christian Glaropoulos picked up his first win of the afternoon by taking down Javi Gonzalez with tech-fall in 4:30. McLaughlin set the pace for WNE to end the quad match with a fall victory over Christian Kuechler in 1:48. Western New England took down Plymouth State with ease, with a final score of 54-0. Western New England would finish the event with a 2-1 afternoon and saw four of their own wrestlers go undefeated.
