Wrestling Competes at NEWA Duals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (January 24, 2022) - The Western New England wrestling team competed at the NEWA Duals hosted by Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears battled for a guaranteed 7th place out of 16 teams at the duals tournament. 

How it Happened: 

Western New England started off by grabbing the first win of the afternoon after Nick Arborio took down Jacob Marselli of Trinity (Conn.) College via fall in 2:43. Corey Cope (133 lb.), Ayden Cheng (141 lb.), James Dougherty (165 lb.) and Sean Monteiro (174 lb.) all competed in the first round for the Golden Bears. WNE saw wins from Colby Reilly (149 lb.), Tristan Julian (157 lb.), Charles Maloy (184 lb.), Darby McLaughlin (197 lb.), and Griffin Ostrom (285 lb.) in the first round. Reilly took care of Finn McGovern in the first round via fall in 2:06 while teammate Julian was able to take down Nicholas Crotty in a 4-0 decision. Maloy, McLaughlin, and Ostrom would win via Fall to move into the quarterfinal match. WNE defeated Trinity in the duals match by a final score of 33-23. 

In the quarterfinal round, Western New England say Arborio take down Justin Lopez from Johnson & Wales University, while McLaughlin was also victorious, defeating Maxx DeCapua of JWU via fall in 6:53. Western New England would be bested in the second round match to the Wildcats, with a final score of 41-9. 

The third round brought on the University of Southern Maine Huskies for Western New England. A back and forth battle between the two teams, USM would take the 27-17 victory, though not before the Golden Bears were able to pick up four wins in the round. Arborio continued his solid day winning via fall in the third match of the day via Fall in 4:40. Reilly took the victory over Kevin Moore via major decision, 10-2. Both Maloy and McLaughlin would be victorious via major decision, with Maloy winning 12-8, and McLaughlin winning 16-4.

In the 7th place match, Western New England would defeat Norwich University 30-23 to cap off a 2-2 day on the mat. Arborio would cap off the afternoon on a win via forfeit, going 4-0 on the day. Cope would pick up his first victory of the afternoon taking down Dylan King via fall in 2:34. Julian would add to the Golden Bears point total, coming away with a 9-4 decision win over Joshua Ducharme. Also winning in the final match of the day were Maloy (tech-fall 18-2), MaLaughlin (major decision 13-5) and Ostrom (fall in 4:13).

In total, the Golden Bears would come in 7th place on the afternoon with both McLaughlin and Arborio leaving undefeated on the mat.
