Wrestling Defeats Rhode Island College 27-18

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (December 3, 2021) – The Golden Bears traveled to Rhode Island College tonight to continue their dual matches this season where Western New England opened the match with four straight wins to take home a 27-18 win over the Anchormen.

Records:

  • Western New England: 2-2
  • Rhode Island College: 0-1

How It Happened:

The match opened at the 133-pound weight class where Nicholas Arborio challenged Kwesi Amoa. Arborio opened with a quick takedown and rolled Amoa to his back to earn four back points to earn an early 6-0 lead. Amoa worked to escape only for Arborio to get another takedown right before the first period ended to lead 8-1. The second period began neutral with Arborio tallying yet another takedown and worked to get two more back points to extend his lead to 12-1. Arborio earned more back points before the period ended to lead 15-1 heading into the final period. Amoa opened the third with an escape only for Arborio to finish the match with a takedown to win via tech fall in 5:26 to earn five points for the Golden Bears.

Corey Cope took the mat for the Golden Bears at 141 to challenge Hunter Lundberg. Lundberg started the action with a takedown. Cope quicky escaped and then kept the momentum to earn a takedown and take a 3-2 lead. He rolled Lundberg to his back to tally four back points to end the first period scoring seven straight points. Cope continued his run into the second period that started neutral. Cope took down Lundberg for his ninth straight point to lead 9-2 and then continued with four more back points to lead 13-2. Lundberg narrowly escapes at the end of the second period to send the match into the third 13-3. Lundberg opened the third on bottom and escaped for another point before Cope returned him to the mat for two points. The match ended with another escape for Lundberg, but Cope earned the win 15-5 major decision to extend the Golden Bears lead to 9-0.

Colby Reilly competed at the 149-weight class for the Golden Bears against Cosmo Stoia of Rhode Island College. Stoia earned the first points with a takedown and then Reilly worked for the escape right before the first period ended. Reilly chose to start on bottom in the second period and escaped to tie the match 2-2. Reilly continued his momentum with a takedown to lead 4-2 heading into the third period. Stoia started on bottom in the third and earned a reversal to tie the match 4-4 and send it to a sudden victory period. Reilly earned a takedown to win the match 6-4 and earn three more points for Western New England to lead 12-0.

Sean Monteiro took the mat at 157 to face Michael Pestana. Pestana earned the first points with a takedown. Monteiro worked for an escape and then began to get back points before pinning Pestana in just 2:52 to win the match and earn the Golden Bears an 18-0 lead in the match.

Luke Pinzino challenged Eric Zane at 165. Zane recorded a takedown that Pinzino escaped from. After that Zane went on a 6-0 run with a takedown and back points before Pinzino escaped again. Zane earned a late takedown to end the first period leading 10-2. In the second period Pinzino began his comeback with four back points off the start to get within four (10-6). Zane escaped shortly after to end the scoring in the second period lead 11-6 heading into the third. Pinzino opened with a takedown and then forced a stalling call on Zane but came up short falling 11-9 for the Anchormen to score their first team points of the match to be down 18-3.

At 174, CJ Glaropoulos took on Rogelio Gonzalez where Glaropoulos earned the only points of the first period with a takedown. Glaropoulos continued his momentum into the second period earning another takedown to lead 4-0 and then led 6-1 heading into the third. Gonzalez started down in the third and got his second escape in the match. Glaropoulos returned Gonzalez to the mat with a takedown only for Gonzalez to earn a reversal to get within four 8-4. Glaropoulos held on to win the match 9-4 with riding time for three more points for the Golden Bears to lead 21-3.

Tyreece Cherival took the mat for the Golden Bears at 184 against Christopher McCarthy. Cherival earned the first takedown only for McCarthy to escape before the period ended. McCarthy earned another escape to start the second period and tie the match 202. The third period started in neutral where McCarthy earned a late takedown to win the match 4-2 and gain three more points for the Anchormen to trail the Golden Bears 21-6.

Darby McLaughlin represented the Golden Bears at 197 facing Jaden Grigsby. McLaughlin earned the first takedown only for Grigsby to escape. McLaughlin began to go to work tallying takedowns and letting Grigsby escape just to return Grigsby to the mat for another two for three times. McLaughlin led 8-3 coming out of the first period and chose down to start the second. McLaughlin quickly escaped and then tallied another takedown to lead 11-3. McLaughlin rolled Grigsby to his back and worked to get the pin in 4:41 to score six more points for the Golden Bears to lead 27-6.

Western New England forfeited the final two matches at 285 and 125 to give the Anchormen 12 points and still defeat Rhode Island College 27-18.
